@Admin brah - quick thread on an actual rep system?

Figured it wouldn't hurt for a separate thread for this. Thanks for all the good changes you make on a weekly basis.

Is it even possible to build a rep system that was like the Misc, where you can see comments, leave them, build and grow reps?

When are you going to build the donation button? I bet we'd donate for your time spent building this if it's possible

He said modern vbulletin doesnt have that rep system so he would have to build it in php which is a lot of work.

Going to sticky this as the update thread.

Getter_done had it right. I've since decided I'm going to take a crack at it. srs. We have nearly 270 members, and the board is really active.

We need a proper rep system to make misc feel whole again.

Please have patience with me though brahs. I do this chit in my spare time. also srs.

Don't 100% know, but I think they were running a highly modified version of a version 3.x or earlier.

It might be why things were getting so clunky at the end.

Codebases rot over time if not properly cared for, and I don't think bb.com had the interest in dumping tons of money into developers to keep it going.

These are just theories, but keeping software up-to-date is the most important thing to do for any software, and it was pretty obvious at the end that they weren't giving it the attention it needed.

Thanks brah. They made massive changes to v5+ regarding plugins, and it seems chatgpt is a little behind/doesn't have enough info on the new one.

The documentation for v6+ is complete ass. It's basically a bunch of strung together posts on their forum.

I worked on it for a few hours today. I believe I'll be able to get a rep count in pretty soon, but a full on user cp with rep comments is going to be a ways off.

I basically need to get a full dev environment set up. The changes are going to be too invasive to just modify in place like I have been doing for some of the simpler things(like bbcodes).

Going to be a couple weeks at least brah.

Improvements to the looks, making it more easy to read like the old misc

I wonder if you should have a thread stickied where you keep like a list of improvements being worked on ranked or something, like notes you can add and shift things around, or a locked Google Sheet

Yeah I was thinking about having a locked thread that I can update to keep people posted. It also gets kinda hectic. Lots of requests, and although I've knocked out quite a few of them, I know I've lost track of a few.

                                                          This made me curious.

I'm looking at some saved source data and they were running vB 4.1.4

That version was released in 2011 and they upgraded to it soon after. That was the last vB update to the forum.

it would be awesome though to see this board surpass the 1000+ active accounts, no small feat from a new board in a shit time for the internet.

Here's a link to the chat with a bunch of directions and code:

                                                                      A.N. Said

a bunch of friends use a Vbulletin forum, the administrator built it from scratch. The forum is meant to mimic the bodybuilding.com forums (often referred to as The Misc) which closed. The users want a reputation system similar to what The Misc had. The Misc used Vbulletin version 4, the new version is version 6. The admin thinks he needs a full dev environment set up. On the Misc, the reputation system was a button you could click next to a post that said "give reputation", you could then add or deduct reputation, and your impact was determined by your own reputation level. You could also leave comments when adding or deducting reputation. For everyone 1,000 reputation you had, you would increase a persons reputation by 1 point. A "neg" (reducing reputation) would reduce it by half of that rate. Is there a way to implement this on Vbulletin V6? I seem to remember admin saying he'll have to code it himself, maybe saying something about PhP?

                                                                      ChatGPT
As of my knowledge cutoff in October 2023, vBulletin 5 Connect is the latest major version of vBulletin. There is no official release of vBulletin version 6. In vBulletin 3 and 4, a built-in reputation system allowed users to give positive or negative feedback on posts, affecting the reputation points of other users. However, vBulletin 5 removed the built-in reputation system, which means the functionality you desire is not available out of the box in the latest versions.

Implementing a Reputation System in vBulletin 5:
                                                                      • Custom Development: Since the built-in feature is absent, the administrator would need to develop a custom reputation system, which involves programming in PHP and integrating it with the existing forum database and interface.
                                                                      • Development Environment: Setting up a full development environment is essential for testing and ensuring that the new system works seamlessly without disrupting the forum's functionality.
                                                                      • Third-Party Plugins: There might be third-party modifications or plugins available from the vBulletin community or developers that replicate the reputation system. However, these are less common for vBulletin 5 due to its architectural changes and reduced modding community compared to earlier versions.

                                                                      Possible Steps Forward:
                                                                      1. Custom Coding: The admin can proceed to code the reputation system, considering factors like user interface, database schema changes, and security.
                                                                      2. Downgrading or Switching Software: If replicating the exact system is crucial and custom development isn't feasible, consider using vBulletin 4 or switching to another forum software like XenForo, which has a robust reputation and user interaction system.
                                                                      3. Consulting vBulletin Support: Reach out to vBulletin's official support or community forums for any available solutions or recommendations.

                                                                      Detailed next steps:

Implementing a reputation system similar to the one from The Misc on your vBulletin forum is a multi-step process that involves both front-end and back-end development. Below is a comprehensive guide to help the administrator build this system.
                                                                      1. Set Up a Development Environment

Before making any changes to the live forum, it's crucial to set up a local or staging environment where you can develop and test the new features without affecting the existing users.
                                                                      • Local Server Setup: Install a local server environment like XAMPP or WampServer that supports PHP and MySQL.
                                                                      • Copy of the Forum: Clone the current forum's files and database to the local environment.
                                                                      • Version Control: Use a version control system like Git to track changes and facilitate collaboration.
                                                                      2. Understand vBulletin's Architecture

Familiarize yourself with vBulletin's codebase, especially how it handles:
                                                                      • User Data: How user information is stored and retrieved.
                                                                      • Post Data: How posts are managed.
                                                                      • Plugins and Hooks: vBulletin often uses a system of hooks that allow you to inject custom code without modifying core files.
                                                                      3. Database Schema Changes

You'll need to modify the database to store reputation data.
                                                                      • Create a New Table for Reputation Actions:
                                                                        sql
                                                                        Copy code
                                                                        CREATE TABLE `user_reputation` ( `id` INT AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY, `from_user_id` INT NOT NULL, `to_user_id` INT NOT NULL, `post_id` INT NOT NULL, `reputation_change` INT NOT NULL, `comment` TEXT, `timestamp` DATETIME DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, FOREIGN KEY (`from_user_id`) REFERENCES `user`(`userid`), FOREIGN KEY (`to_user_id`) REFERENCES `user`(`userid`), FOREIGN KEY (`post_id`) REFERENCES `post`(`postid`) );
                                                                      • Add a Reputation Field to the User Table:
                                                                        sql
                                                                        Copy code
                                                                        ALTER TABLE `user` ADD `reputation` INT DEFAULT 0;
                                                                      4. Implementing the Logic for Reputation Calculation
                                                                      • Determine User Impact:
                                                                        • Positive Reputation ("Pos Rep"): For every 1,000 reputation points the user has, they can add 1 point to another user's reputation.
                                                                        • Negative Reputation ("Neg Rep"): They can subtract at half the rate, so for every 1,000 reputation points, they can subtract 0.5 points.
                                                                      • Calculating Reputation Impact:
                                                                        php
                                                                        Copy code
                                                                        function calculateReputationImpact($fromUserReputation, $isNegative = false) { $impact = floor($fromUserReputation / 1000); if ($isNegative) { $impact = floor($impact / 2); $impact = max($impact, 1); // Ensure at least 1 point is deducted return -$impact; } return max($impact, 1); // Ensure at least 1 point is added }
                                                                      5. Adding User Interface Elements
                                                                      • Add "Give Reputation" Button Next to Posts:
                                                                        • Template Modification: Edit the postbit template to include a "Give Reputation" button.
                                                                        • Button Action: The button should open a modal or redirect to a form where the user can select positive or negative reputation and add a comment.
                                                                      • Create a Reputation Form:
                                                                        • Fields Needed:
                                                                          • Reputation Type: Positive or Negative.
                                                                          • Comment: Optional text area for comments.
                                                                        • Form Submission: The form should submit to a PHP script that handles the reputation logic.
                                                                      6. Handling Form Submission and Reputation Updates
                                                                      • Validate Input:
                                                                        • Ensure the user is logged in.
                                                                        • Prevent users from giving reputation to themselves.
                                                                        • Check if the user has already given reputation to the same post/user recently to prevent abuse.
                                                                      • Update Database:
                                                                        • Insert a new record into the user_reputation table.
