without mcgregor, the UFC is boring

UFC fans, especially americans, should be thanking us for gifting him to you

when he's not fighting/ press conferences, things are just not as interesting

i know the purists wont care, but he created buzz and controversary

these days i struggle to convince myself to watch the ufc unless there are tasty fights on

the latest main card(?) was a joke....except maybe two of the fights

I think the ESPN deal had more to do with it than McGregor, who I think is irrelevant at this point. There's a UFC show almost every other week with a bunch of people you never heard of. ESPN has the demand, UFC puts on shows, and in the end the product gets watered down.

            Hard disagree

Middleweight, Lightweight, welterweight, and flyweight are all stacked to the brim. So many new contenders and future champions in the making as well. Never been a better time to be a UFC fan.

And yet hes still their biggest star by a LONG stretch. He done a betting stream a few days ago and it was the most reposted media in MMA news that entire week. What does that say to you?

dis a good thang if u actually like da sport. Imagine complaining bout more fights wtf!? Da only thang watering down da sport rn is bald ass dana chasing loot n ruining da shit wit 2 much gambling n sponsored bullshit n tryna make geeks like mcgregor sum wwe type celebrity.

these guys like jon jones and ngannou and mcgregor n shit dont wanna fite nobody they rich as hell already n scared of losing they rep so the shit takes yrs to setup n ends up overpromoted n dissapointing no matter wut happens. Then everybody say it look fixed cuz the shit just end up like boxing where the only way that shit even happens is if it setup so a nigga mite be willing 2 take a dive for a few mellion lmao.

they need to go back to pride rules so these boring ass wrestlers aren't rewarded. UFC has always been boring with wrestlers its just they sometimes can get characters like McGregor who they can align the matches right so they don't run into any good wrestlers. Conor only got Chad Mendes on short notice otherwise he loses that and the run never happens.

how can you say for certain the run would not have happened? pure speculation

the fact is it did happen

we had mendes and faber telling us that mendes was ready and would dominate to get the win.

as soon as he loses they say mendes wasnt ready/ short notice etc

                      cant have it both ways

mendes had connor on the mat but did next to fuck all...mcgregor got cut but managed to elbow the fuck out of mendes from his back

So a guy gets a title shot off four fights, wins the belt against his life long rival, has a rematch. Moves up in weight to claim 2x belts, only 9 have done this. Defends his LHW belt 3x in a year and has had his fight moved from a boring Russian wrestler to a stand up only Thai stylist who is on a 5 fight win streak. 10 years ago a 5 fight win streak made you the undeniable #1 contender in basically every division besides 135/145/155. So the UFC has a star, has him fight basically every quarter, makes better match ups for him so its more entertaining, and you dismiss him and his opponent as a no body while also dissing wrestlers who obviously got punished in this ordeal. You can't have your cake and eat it too. The company is doing everything they can to fill the void Connor left, and if you are paying attention you'd see they've filled it and then some.

We get 40 something fights a year, 12+ pay per views with stacked main cards. They go international all the time. They make boring wrestlers go 10-0 before Dana even mentions them at press conferences, let alone get title shots. What more do you want? You can't just make the top 10 in the company fight every week.

They filled the conor void and more??? With what?? O'Malley???? Lmao Perirra who has zero personality? Izzy who is done and was cringe anyway?

Listen, every sport needs personalities and story makers. Conor had that in buckets and got eyes on ufc.

and the main cards aren't STACKED . Look at 306.... it was a joke and people actually paid for that slop

Two rifts seem to be forming here. Purity of sport vs entertainment. If you want entertainment, no one's toppin Connor 2014-2016, but that was a decade ago. The company cannot organically replace that. However they can fill the talent void and have done so 10 fold since that era. Not the company's fault no one is willing to rise to where Connor was verbally. If you watch for any reason besides the press conference highlights, than the UFC has gotten better year after year since inception. If you can't watch any random fight night main card and be entertained, then you aren't a fan of MMA, you are a fan of trash talk between the companies top 10 fighters, which is fine, but perhaps watch pro wrestling where the company cares more about entertainment than talent and sport. They are moving on from Connor, but some people aren't and this is the divide.

And LMAO if you pay for fights.

Talent is better now than 10 years ago??? In 2016 we gad conor, prime jon jones v cormier, robbie lawlor, DJ, JDS, Cruz, dilashaw, rockhold, Diaz, bisping, Romero, cain, aldo, Alvarez, prime stipe, rouser, Nunez and a lot more.

                              Lots of rivalries, stories, personalities.

Agreed. Sure we're seeing lots of new talent popping up in 2024, but how many of them will make it? They get pushed hard by the UFC marketing machine and people buy into it thinking "OMGZ this guy is the next JJ", but its just not the case. Compare 2014 to 2024 champ list.

                                2014:
                                • Heavyweight: Cain Velasquez
                                • Light Heavyweight: Jon Jones
                                • Middleweight: Chris Weidman
                                • Welterweight: Johny Hendricks
                                • Lightweight: Anthony Pettis
                                • Featherweight: José Aldo
                                • Bantamweight: T.J. Dillashaw
                                • Flyweight: Demetrious Johnson
                                2024:
                                • Heavyweight: Jon Jones
                                • Light Heavyweight: Jiří Procházka
                                • Middleweight: Sean Strickland
                                • Welterweight: Leon Edwards
                                • Lightweight: Islam Makhachev
                                • Featherweight: Alexander Volkanovski
                                • Bantamweight: Sean O'Malley
                                • Flyweight: Alexandre Pantoja

UFC was much more fun back then. Nowadays its a mess of half assed talnet coming in off DWC etc.

It was better when fighters had mastered a discipline instead of being generic "MMA fighters".

Also agree about the ESPN coverage. The old gladiator intro would get you psyched, then cut to Goldberg and Rogan introducing the card, it was a great format that didn't need to change.
